Why The Economist’s Cover Story Validates Feminist Mediumship

Inspired by The Economist, Cover Story, June 7th 2025

If you've ever followed the work of Marc Stuart Medium or taken part in Marc Stuart Medium Training, you’ll already know how much of our spiritual path is grounded in emotion, intuition, and connection. That’s not a passing trend—it’s the foundation of what we teach in feminist mediumship, particularly in the Scottish style.

So imagine my surprise (or not) when The Economist—yes, that famously restrained voice of capitalism and global policy—put on its front cover: “Phew, it’s a girl!” A full cover story celebrating how wealthy societies now prefer daughters over sons.

Turns out, the mainstream might finally be catching up with what we’ve known for decades in the mediumship world.

Reading The Economist as a Hyper-Intelligent Child

Marc Stuart Medium read way ahead of his years as a child.

I started reading The Economist as a child—you know, as most hyper-intelligent children do. I vividly remember spotting a short article about a strange immune disorder, years before AIDS hit global headlines. I mentioned it to my parents. They dismissed it.

But it turned out to be one of the biggest medical stories of our time.

Sometimes you see the curve coming before the road turns.

For context: The Economist is a weekly publication founded in 1843, covering politics, economics, science, and global affairs with a trademark dry tone. It’s not glossy or flashy, but to a certain kind of reader—especially young, curious, analytical types—it’s addictive. Especially if, like me, you preferred politics over cartoons. Unless, of course, the cartoons were in The Economist.

From Daughters to Divine Feminine

Spiritualism has always been dominated by females, now the Goddess Culture is expanding.
Daughters to Divine Feminine

The June 7th 2025 cover story explores how parents in affluent societies increasingly prefer daughters to sons. Why?

Because daughters are:

  • More emotionally connected

  • Higher performing in education

  • Viewed as safer, more rewarding, and more stable over time

It’s a societal shift that echoes everything we champion in feminist mediumship—a practice built on emotional intelligence, sensitivity, and deep relational connection.

This mirrors exactly why mediumship circles have always been predominantly female. The intuitive, emotionally nuanced work we do is often best cultivated in those who are biologically adjusted to listen deeply, feel fully, and connect relationally.

For decades, we’ve said that spirit speaks through feeling, presence, and connection. And suddenly, that’s what the parenting world is prioritising.

While reading the article, my wife Ying burst out laughing. Across from us, in a local beauty parlour, all the women were having their nails done—by men. We were in the phone shop, checking our roaming plan before a trip to Ireland.

But the symbolism was perfect.

In a world once obsessed with sons and male authority, here we were watching men clip and polish the hands of women… while The Economist declared the age of the daughter.

This is what happens when the material world begins catching up with the spiritual.

Where Are the Boys?

The article also highlights a growing crisis: boys are being left behind.

Statistically, they struggle more with school, emotional regulation, and long-term outcomes. Parents worry. Systems fail them. And in our own world of Marc Stuart Medium Training, we’ve often joked about being the only man in the room.

Is this a crisis? Or a clearing?

Mediumship—like modern parenting—is increasingly coded feminine. And that’s not a bad thing… unless we leave no space for balance, healing, or integration of masculine energy too.

Feminist Mediumship Was Always Ahead
Girls overtaking boys in everything, matching the way Spiritualism has been for decades.
Girls way ahead where are the boys?

The Economist’s editors didn’t mention mediumship, of course. But if you read between the lines, the entire article points to the very same values we’ve embodied for years:

  • Emotional connection over hierarchy

  • Spiritual maturity over material power

  • Presence over performance

That’s what we teach in Marc Stuart Medium Training. It’s what I’ve practiced as The Scottish Medium on platforms around the world. It’s what our circles, livestreams, and one-to-one readings all reflect.

The Shift Has Already Happened

So if you’re raising daughters, mentoring new mediums, or noticing the changing energy in your community—this isn’t some random trend. This is the mainstream catching up with the spiritual.

The world is changing its mind about what matters.

The spirit world, perhaps, never had any doubt.
