Defying Gravity: A Medium’s Take on the Spiritual Magic of Wicked: Part One

As a medium seeking spiritual encouragement, I found Wicked: Part One to be a profoundly enriching experience that delves deeply into themes of friendship, self-discovery, and the transformative power of embracing one's true identity. Notably, this adaptation covers only the first act of the original stage musical, with a runtime of 2 hours and 40 minutes—10 minutes longer than the entire stage production.

This extended duration allows for a more immersive narrative, providing richer character development and a more detailed exploration of the story's spiritual themes. The film's director, Jon M. Chu, made a deliberate choice to split the adaptation into two parts to ensure that no key elements were omitted. He emphasized the importance of setting up Elphaba's character more extensively than the stage show, allowing audiences to see her childhood and the development of her pivotal relationships.

Cynthia Erivo's portrayal of Elphaba is both compelling and nuanced, capturing the character's inner turmoil and resilience. Her performance brings depth to Elphaba's journey from a misunderstood outcast to a self-assured individual, mirroring the spiritual path of embracing one's true self despite societal judgments. Ariana Grande's Glinda offers a delightful blend of charm and depth, showcasing her versatility as an actress and singer. Glinda's transformation from a superficial socialite to a compassionate ally highlights the importance of personal growth and the shedding of ego-driven desires.

The film's music serves as a conduit for spiritual reflection. Iconic numbers like "Defying Gravity" inspire a sense of liberation and empowerment, encouraging viewers to rise above societal expectations and embrace their true selves. The extended runtime allows for a more detailed exploration of these themes, providing a richer emotional journey. Additionally, the film includes new original songs, further enhancing the narrative and emotional depth.

Visually, Wicked: Part One is a feast for the senses. The vibrant sets and costumes create a magical atmosphere that enhances the storytelling, with the cinematography capturing the essence of Oz and making it a character in its own right. The film's set design, described as stage-like, contributes to an enchanting yet realistic atmosphere.

A particularly poignant subplot involves Doctor Dillamond, a Goat professor at Shiz University who faces discrimination and ultimately loses his ability to speak. This tragic turn serves as a catalyst for Elphaba's activism and highlights the film's exploration of marginalization and the loss of voice.

As a mediumship teacher, I couldn't help but reflect on the importance of communication in my own practice and found myself humorously hoping that I never find myself in a similar predicament.

Wicked: Part One is a spiritually uplifting film that delves into themes of self-discovery and acceptance. Its extended runtime enriches the narrative, offering a more comprehensive and fulfilling experience. For those seeking inspiration and encouragement, this film is a must-watch. Moreover, with the story covering only the first half of the stage musical, audiences can eagerly anticipate Wicked: Part Two, set to release in November 2025, to complete this captivating journey.
